Now that summer's moving into its final days and school is starting to pick up, I've found that I miss the experience of summer break more each and every day. To try and hearken back to the feeling of the last few months, I've mostly been sitting in bed watching movies and browsing the internet--two summer break tasks if ever there were. In these days of youtube, on-the-minute news and intense celebrity gossip, the combination becomes dangerous.
Summer's coming to an end, and my inbox is finally starting to fill up with e-mails I've expected for the past few months. There's the expected school flood of letters, of course, and my management position as an RA takes up a fair amount of time.. but the real stress comes with the founding of our Student Agency, Pinpoint Etching. We're starting a company here at school designed to help kids personalize their high tech gadgets through a novel etching process we designed. However, working through the student agencies and all we're going to have to learn how to deal with a number of employees, spread all around campus and generally unavailable by phone. We began to investigate different ways of keeping in touch--Google Apps was the biggest one we found, but it was full of bugs to be discussed later, and we ended up dropping it in favor of a good old mailing list. However, these e-mails seem to indicate that we're going to be saddled with a lot more employees than we had imagined, all with individual needs for data access and scheduling. As this is Princeton University, the head of the Student Agencies department has saddled me with the task of finding software to regulate content management within his organization, as well as mine. We're looking for some sort of server component that will allow the administrator to create unique homepages for each of its users, building off of the Google model but without the bugs we described. With this seed in mind, I started searching around the internet for the best solution... and revered all around, the best I could find in its class is BoxesOS.
Here at Princeton, ePazz's focus on industry and higher education presents the perfect blend of functionality we need with our employees. BoxesOS tackles document management, allowing us to distribute customer lists to everyone who needs them (among so much more!), employee scheduling, ongoing employee training, web design by staff with little or no knowledge of HTML using a visual interface, and enterprise level e-mail. All of these tools will make the stressful experience of starting a company while enrolled in college just that much simpler for everyone involved, which excites me to no end.
I expect only good things out of BoxesOS and ePazz, but our bad experience with Google had my neck up at the time, and I'm not sure I can trust any software package the requires commitment before trial. BoxesOS has won my trust by allowing thirty days of risk free trial, making it easy to see if the package will really integrate well with our system. More importantly, ePazz is committed to working with us (the customer) from start to finish to make sure we end up with the right setup and only get what we can benefit from out of the software. I'm off to sign up now--It's nice to know that in this ever more complicated world, there are still those focusing on solutions that can effectively streamline the tough process of running a business.

So in this wonderful new age in my life of digital photography and investment savvy, I've reached one of my first big challenges in thrifty spending. I went ahead and bought a nice big laser printer to save some money on sending away for prints for some of my better photos. The printer turned out to be pretty cheap, to my great surprise--but I do believe I've discovered why. It looks like the ink cartridges sold for most big printers these days are quite a bit more expensive than the prints I was seeking to make would be from one of the big printhouses! I was faced with a couple of options. The first option, simple though not so attractive, was to admit my fault and put the big printer up on eBay, then go rely on big printhouses to ship me my work whenever I wanted copies. The route I decided to take, however, led me to the world of Inkrite Ink Cartridges.
Now, this won't work so well for me here in the US, as the company only ships to the UK, but I feel "privileged" enough to review the site as my uncle Potter comes over so often from England and could easily place my orders for me. This company, Inkrite, stocks all sorts of original and generic brand inkjet cartridges, laser toners and printer ink. The range of companies from which they supply include HP, Epson, Canon, Dell, Lexmark and Xerox... my big new Canon printer takes a huge amount of cartridges, so a really cheap bulk order can save me tons of money. Turns out that this company also delivers free within the UK on orders of £100 or more.
So, I'm sold. navigating around the site is really easy, and each ink cartridge page boasts an extensive list of what printers will work with the given cartridge. I can use a google search to search the page directly and find any cartridge relating to my machine, compare prices, and get the best deal in a way that traditional US shops like Circuit City or others would never allow. If you live in the UK, jump on this. If not, find a relative who travels a bit and make them pick you up a shipment!

So, as junior year of college rolls around and my advisees start to move into their dorms, my mind turns to a little something that my dad said to me just months ago. My little brother and I often make fun of dad for his "cueball", that shiny bald spot that he sports around on the top of his head, confident in our jokes as our maternal grandfather still sports a full head of hair. After one particularly witty joke, dad threw the zinger... "maybe you should just start rubbing in the Rogaine now, son. We'll see who comes out on top." My hair's always been long and full, winding thickly down past my ears in blond curls... but recently i got it all lopped off, cut short, and the results were a bit shocking.
My hair is thinning! I'm not all THAT vain, but dad was fully bald by the time he turned twenty five. I've got 4 years or so to go until I have to worry about full baldness, but it's time to start thinking. I've investigated a few options so far, and frankly don't trust anything except the full-on medical route--I've decided that when the time comes, I'm going to go for the grafts. Given the recent debate I've been keeping you all up on about the Florida house, I've decided I'm going to get my hair transplants in florida. I've done a little investigation, and the most reliable source is Dr. Shapiro Hair Institute in Del Ray Beach or Hollywood, Florida. It's a long way to Florida, but I'll be going to Dr. Shapiro's on one of my month long trips so as to get the treatment and recover all in one go! Dr. Shapiro offers grafts as cheap as three bucks a root, with plenty of financing options available. More important to me than the money is the availability of audio testimonials from real customers touting the process as one of the best things to happen to them in the last decade! You meet personally with Dr. Shapiro, have him design your hairline, and work from there towards a painless, stress-free procedure. Everything's done within the day, and you can go home to recover in the peace of your own home.
Hopefully I won't need this treatment myself as a young man anytime soon, but I'll choose to ignore my dad's advice about rubbing in the Rogaine. It seems that better treatment lies just a few hour's drive south, down in the Sunshine State with Dr. Shapiro.

Here I am, a teenage boy sitting in his new college room, getting ready for another season of social pressures and sleepless nights. I'm an RA this year, and have spent the last few days preparing to teach my new freshman the lessons of college awkwardness and how to navigate within the bizarre walls of this university. Some of the bigger issues kids face coming out of high school include religious quandaries, homophobia, utter confusion about one's role in the new sea of college and the problem of navigating the large world of a university after the relative structure of high school. But the one big issue that i KNOW many of my freshman will face is Skin Care. lots of these kids show up with acne, and though it's not a huge deal to anyone around them it can really prohibit students from going out and making friends. One of the keys to confidence is being happy with your physical appearance, and I hope that I can pass along a bit of the knowledge I've discovered over the years about really taking care of skin problems fast.
The easiest solution I've found for acne treatment comes from a company called TriClear. TriClear's method relies on a three step system designed to clear up any acne problems that you (or any other college student!) may currently have, all the while hydrating the skin and laying the groundwork for the healing process that will occur in the later stages of treatment. According to the site, 74%* of those who use the TriClear solution see results within the first week. Of course if one gets proven results it can be just fine to wait a month or so, but I'll be meeting these guys for the first time just a week or so before they're released into the ravenous social environment of Princeton, and would love to give them a chance to try things out and get a little hope blazing in their eyes! One of the problems I've found with my treatments in the past have been flaking and dryness related to Benzoyl Peroxide... this stuff just doesn't dry you out. You treat with a three step system of purifying cleanser, repairing gel and revitalizing cream for fast, great results.
If any of my zees are reading this and want to check out a free trial of TriClear, try the link above. Looking forward to meeting all of you, and making the transition as seamless as possible!
My iStockphoto application is off for submission, and I've got quite a few photos earmarked to sell... but most of my photos aren't really "stock photos", but more the type of photos that I'd like to frame and set around my house for my family's enjoyment. It would be pretty expensive to print each and every one that I want off and rotate them around the house--the solution presented itself in the form of a digital photo frame. These clever devices set an LCD screen into an attractive decorative frame, allowing you to upload a whole range of photos into the device. The frame can be set to cycle your pictures in a slideshow, or to lock in your favorite image until you decide to change what’s shown. These would be perfect for family reunions, in which each attending member of a family could bring a selection of photos to be uploaded to the frame—the slideshow throughout the reunion would have everyone ooing and ahhhing over the visual stories shown on every digital picture frame.
One company that sells such digital frames is called (who’da thought!) Digital Framez. They offer four sizes—7”, 8”, 9”, and 10”—and a choice between wood, clear, and black acrylic frames. These guys will include a free 128mb flash drive with each purchase of a 9” or 10” frame, though you’re on your own for the smaller sizes. (Don’t worry, flash drives are cheap and easy to buy at checkout.) Use this flash drive to transfer pictures from your computer or camera memory card directly into the digital frame, and use the included remote to choose your favorite slideshow theme. Setting transitions and time periods between each picture is a definite must when showing off one’s photos to a group. Digital Frames are compatible with JPEG, MP4, DivX, AVI, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, MP3, WMA, WAV formats, which means you can also view videos on the frame (speakers included!) Headset jack is also included for more private viewing. The digital picture frame comes with a 9V wall jack adapter, alleviating the need for any complex setup.
If you go the route of the digital picture frame, make sure to leave me comments telling me how you used yours!

My junior year at Princeton is approaching, and time is getting short for me to decide what the heck I want to do with my life! The decision begins this fall, with the internship search for next summer, and stretches over into the coming years as I search for permanent employment and a desk that will hold me for years to come. As part of that job search, I had lunch with one of the big bosses at the company I'm now interning at, where we started talking about the market we're in-- Private Equity. The field is unique and small in finance, incredibly lucrative and very hard to predict based on past data. This is mostly due to the private, secretive nature of the small companies that private equity encompasses. Many of these companies are working in proprietary stuff that could be very damaging, were it let out by imprudent investors or folks foraging around the internet for dirt. I have friends who do this and choose not to release the information that they find, but some of these documents that turn up from a mere Google search can be very financially damaging indeed.
I plan on interning at Blue Origin next summer, a small company out in Seattle heavily engaged in the space race against Virgin Galactic. In the early days of this industry, or really any young industry, it becomes incredibly important to keep documents secret. This is changing with the advent of the blogging age, but to a large degree it is still true. After the conversation about private equity, I became very curious as to what security people at companies do to keep their reputations safe. Surely they must carry out online data monitoring of the net to make sure that nothing proprietary has leaked? This would certainly make sense, yet is hardly ever done.
However! There's still hope. I found a company called webArgos which deals with the very problem of online data monitoring and its relation to security. The concept interested me so much that I tried to sign up, and soon found that webArgos caters only to companies and organizations looking to contract with them for a long period of time. Individuals look elsewhere... but that only made me feel better about the company's services. Courts these days do not look well on companies that do not abide by their own confidentiality regulations, and webArgos--through a variety of non-legal techniques at first, though they'll help press legal action--seeks to remove this issue from the worries of companies undergoing litigation. I'm starting a company at school, and even I worry about this stuff!
The site looks good, and the group boasts a great web interface in which companies can log in and see a list of potentially harmful pages and records found around the net. The user can then choose whether to leave it be or take action, after which webArgos will go work. All in all, the service sounds fantastic, and is certainly much needed. In a sector like private equity, the last thing an investor wants is to have a company tank due to unsound data management and intellectual property rights. Hopefully companies like Argos can eliminate this worry, and allow the industry to blossom like the gem that it is.
